EVs need no oil change, but they still need servicing — gearbox fluid, brakes, tires, coolant and cabin filters.
An electric vehicle has no engine oil, no spark plugs and no exhaust, so the single most common service item simply disappears. That leads a lot of owners to assume EVs need no maintenance at all, which is not quite right — the list is shorter, not empty.
What remains still matters. EVs are heavy and deliver torque instantly, which is hard on tires. Most have a single-speed reduction gearbox with fluid that has a service interval. Battery thermal management runs on coolant. And regenerative braking means the friction brakes are used lightly and infrequently — which sounds good, but lightly used brakes seize and corrode, particularly through a salted Ontario winter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do electric vehicles need oil changes?
No — an EV has no combustion engine and therefore no engine oil. What it does have is reduction gearbox fluid, brake fluid and coolant, all of which have service intervals. That is the maintenance that replaces the oil change on an EV.
Why do EV tires wear out faster?
Two reasons. Battery packs make EVs considerably heavier than an equivalent petrol car, and electric motors deliver full torque from a standstill. More weight and more torque both accelerate tread wear, which makes regular rotation more valuable on an EV, not less.
Do you work on high-voltage battery packs?
No. High-voltage battery and drive unit work requires specialist certification and equipment, and belongs with a dealer or an EV specialist. We handle the mechanical side — gearbox fluid, brakes, tires, suspension, coolant and filters — and we will say plainly when a job is outside what we do.
