Power steering is a hydraulic system, and like any hydraulic system it depends on clean fluid at the right specification. Over time that fluid picks up heat, moisture and fine metal particles worn from the pump and rack. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid is abrasive, and it is grinding away at the two most expensive components in the system.

How often should power steering fluid be changed?
Around every 80,000 km for most vehicles, though many manufacturers do not publish an interval at all. Condition is the better guide: fresh fluid is clear or light red, and fluid that has gone dark brown is overdue regardless of the odometer.
My steering whines — is it always the fluid?
Not always. Low fluid, air in the system, a failing pump or a leaking rack all produce similar noises. We check the fluid level and condition first because it is the cheapest and most common cause, but we will inspect the pump and rack before recommending anything larger.
Does my car even have power steering fluid?
Many newer vehicles use electric power steering, which has no fluid and needs no service. If yours is electric we will tell you immediately rather than selling you a service you cannot use. Hydraulic systems are still common on older cars, trucks and vans.
